If you are like me, you love having meaningful art displayed around your home. A few years ago I got very intentional with what was hanging on the walls of our home. If it didn’t have significant meaning to me, it got taken down and a lot of our walls remained blank for a while until I could figure out what I wanted displayed and where. As we were doing our office remodel this past fall, I took down everything on the walls to paint and slowly have been adding in pieces that are meaningful. Like most parents, your kids are probably top on the list of what you want displayed in your home but with me being a photographer, you can imagine they are displayed in A LOT of places through out our home! So for this office wall, I wanted something a little bit different that wasn’t just a standard photograph or canvas and thats where I came up with these silhouette’s of the kids turned into art peices. Of course, baby number 4 hasn’t arrived yet so his or her ultrasound photo will have to do in the frame until we see his or her face but I wanted to get this project completed before baby is born and I’m going to show you how you can do the same!! You don’t need a fancy camera, a cell phone photo will actually do just fine. But you will need to know how to use photoshop (or have a friend who does) as that is where the magic comes alive.
(Katie Lamb Photography has a really great tutorial on achieving this in photoshop. I will link her video below!)
First, you have your child turn sideways against a blank wall. The lighter the wall color the better. If you have little girls, try to get their hair in a high ponytail. Take a photo at their level — so you aren’t shooting down on them, you want to be shooting straight at their head from the side.
Next, open photoshop and follow the instructions in this video. Your silhouette’s should look similar to these when finished!
Then you can either print these from a professional lab using fine art paper for the true heirloom look or you can print from home. I purchased watercolor paper from our local Hobby Lobby and it gave me the heirloom look and texture I was going for.
Last, hang them in your favorite frame and display in your home! I found these frames on Amazon and absolutely love the quality of them and the white oak framing coordinated perfectly in our office! This project was such a fun and easy way to add art and meaning to our office space! Our office is so very close to being completely finished an I think I dare to say, it might be my favorite room in our home so far!!!
