Our DIY pool build is finally completed and the very last step was sealing the natural stone we chose to use for the pool coping. Our original vision for the pool was to have light concrete with darker coping to give the two a contrast to each other. Because we used natural stone, the color of it can vary so much from a sample so the stone came in a lot lighter than we anticipated, so there was very little contrast between the coping and the rest of the pool deck. Thats when we came across a product by Black Diamond Stoneworks that we thought would be the perfect solution to our problem. They make a color enhancing penetrating sealer that darkens the surface as well as sealing it (which is a must for a saltwater pool – the salt will eventually damage the natural stone). We teamed up with them to do this project and are so excited to show you the final result!! Here are a few before photos of the coping before we applied the sealer.
This product was extremely easy to apply. I used a regular paintbrush and applied a generous amount, then waited 10 minutes or so and wiped off the excess. I just had to be careful to not splatter or get it on the concrete surface.
After one coat, it was noticeably darker but I was really wanting it to be a little darker so I applied a second coat and love the way it turned out!! It definitely gave the stone the contrast we had in our original vision for our pool and also is functional in sealing the stone from all the elements, pool salt, and chemicals.
It’s been two full years since we started building our own pool and it’s finally completed!!! Just in time to relax and wait on baby #4 to make her or his appearance in a few weeks!
